Frequently Asked Questions and Answers
What is Shamanic Counseling?
Shamanic counseling is a method of
counseling where the Shaman uses her/his
ability to access the spirit world in order
to work with their spirit guides to answer
the questions for the client. The
spirits will give the “spiritual” reason for
the questions asked. These ancient
principles can be utilized regardless of the
client’s religious beliefs.
How is Shamanic counseling different
from other types of counseling?
Shamanic counseling is not psychotherapy.
It is “spiritual in nature. The
counselor is only relying to the client what
his or her spirit guides are there to tell
him. The spiritual reasons.
Are there evil forces that interfere
with the answers?
Although Shamans realize evil forces exist
they don’t allow these forces into their
realm. First we are protected from the
evil force through the specific sound of the
drum beat that guides us but also we are
taught that if an evil force gets into a
journey we leave and return to this reality
immediately.
What kinds of people are interested
in this kind of work?
Anyone who wishes to grow or evolve.
Why would I need soul retrieval?
Anyone who feels there is an emptiness
inside them selves. Often times
this emptiness is described by a whole
inside. I fill this emptiness with
food, drugs, alcohol excessive exercise,
shopping. Another description we
often use for soul loss is, Boy
is she OUT THERE! What we are
really saying is
there is a part of her that is not in her
body!
Why would I seek journey work?
Journey work is used to retrieve information
for the client from the spirit realm.
Often times we are so close to a situation
that we can’t listen to our own guidance
being offered. Sometimes healing
requires the intervention of another person
at other times we can receive a healing from
moments in nature through dreams or others
types of stillness from the rational mind.
Will the answers I receive be
comfortable?
The answers are always beneficial, ethical
and with in your value system. The
answer is uniquely formed to benefit you in
the most appropriate way.
Is it OK to be afraid?
It is normal to be nervous when trying
something new? Generally after the
first session the client realizes there is
no reason to be uncomfortable.

Who is Michael Harner?
“Michael Harner is an anthropologist who has
been widely recognized as the leading
authority in the world on shamanism.
He discovered shamanism while conducting
fieldwork among the Conibo Indians in the
upper Amazon. Harner has been
very instrumental in making Shamanic
techniques widely available to Westerners
and as well as in revitalizing the practice
of shamanism in some tribal cultures.
Through his workshops he has exposed
thousands of Westerners to these ancient
techniques.”

Who is Sandra Ingerman?
“Sandra Ingerman is one of Harner’s closest
colleagues and an accomplished shaman in her
own right. She’s authored several books such
as Soul Retrieval and Welcome Home plus
others that can be found on line.
She clarifies soul loss as the result of
traumatic events such as incest, abuse, loss
of a loved one, surgery, accident, illness,
miscarriage, abortion, the stress of combat,
addiction, verbal abuse, or divorce.
Although the accepted treatment for most of
these disorders is psychotherapy, Ingerman
pointed out that from the Shamanic
perspective, psychotherapy cannot be
effective if the aspect of personality we
are addressing is not present.”
